Data released this Wednesday (17) showed that China’s population declined for the second year in a row, causing even more concerns about the future growth of the world’s second largest economy.
Where did this come from?
As a result, the data showed a population of 1.409 billion at the end of 2023 – a reduction of 2.08 million compared to 2022.
Furthermore, the most recent decline is double that recorded in the previous year, which marked the country’s first population decline in 60 years.
But experts say the drop was expected, considering the expanding urban class and the country’s record low birth rate.
Finally, Beijing said on Wednesday that the birth rate fell to 6.39 per 1,000 inhabitants, matching that of other East Asian nations such as Japan and South Korea.
