As a result, French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to promulgate the decision this Friday (8), International Women’s Day. According to him, the right to abortion will now become “irreversible”.

This Monday’s vote stated in Article 34 of the French Constitution that “the law determines the conditions under which a woman is guaranteed the freedom to resort to abortion.” The text had already been approved in both houses of the French Parliament, the National Assembly and the Senate.

The proposal was approved by 780 votes in favor to 72 against in a joint session at the Palace of Versailles that brought together both chambers of the French Parliament. A three-fifths vote in favor was required for approval.

It is worth remembering that in France, women have had the right to abortion guaranteed by law since 1975. Although the decision was heavily criticized at the time, the issue has broad approval across the French political spectrum. According to the Simone Veil Law, women are allowed to have an abortion up to the 14th week of pregnancy.

The right to abortion is widely accepted in France, with support from more than 80% of French people, according to polls. Acceptance on the subject is greater than in the United States and many other countries around the world.
