Doctor says plane crash victims felt no pain

The tragic plane crash that shocked Brazil last week, occurring in a condominium in São Paulo, and resulting in the death of 62 people, is still being analyzed by experts. In an interview with the IEL Cast podcast, forensic doctor Dr. Antônio Nunes provided clarification on what happens to people during a plane crash.

According to Dr. Nunes, the dynamics of a plane crash involve factors that minimize the perception of pain for passengers. “When you go down all at once, you faint, you lose consciousness. So, the chance of someone being awake at the end of that fall, including the pilot himself, is almost impossible. Logically, they should be unconscious,” he said.

The expert emphasized that the human body reacts in a way that protects the person from trauma. “They didn’t feel pain. The body protects them during the fall, precisely from the trauma that will come. [They are unconscious], but alive. When they get down there, with all the trauma, the question of death itself arises,” he explained.

The Forensic Medical Institute (IML) confirmed that the victims died as a result of multiple trauma, the result of the violent impact with the ground. “Today, we are convinced that they all died of multiple trauma. It is a scientific certainty, the aircraft fell from a height of 4,000 meters and, upon hitting the ground, the impact was very great and they all suffered multiple trauma,” said Vladmir Alves dos Reis, director of the IML.

Reis also emphasized that death occurred instantly, without the victims feeling any pain. “There is no way to feel pain, because death is instantaneous,” he pointed out.
