The European Union is urging residents to assemble emergency kits with supplies to last up to 72 hours, in preparation for potential crises. The European Commission, the bloc’s main executive and political body, issued the guidance Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The commission recommended that people in all 27 EU member states prepare emergency backpacks with drinking water, nonperishable food, first-aid supplies and personal hygiene items. It also listed flashlights, radios and portable cellphone chargers as suggested essentials.
The commission said the nonbinding guidance is intended to encourage a culture of preparedness across Europe and help individuals and communities be better informed and equipped to anticipate and respond to crises.
The EU said the measure is aimed at preparing the public for natural disasters, geopolitical crises and cyber threats.
