Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said four oil tankers caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, Nov. 4. The Guard said the vessels struck naval mines while attempting to pass through a prohibited route south of the strait.

The Guard said the four tankers were still burning and that two other vessels it described as violating the rules had been intercepted. It did not identify the ships’ nationalities. As of the report, no information was available about possible deaths or injuries.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also said it had shot down a drone over the strait. The report did not provide further details about the drone or the circumstances of the incident.

Iran has imposed strict limits on vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict in the Middle East began. The waterway is important to the global economy: between 20% and 30% of the world’s oil and at least 20% of its liquefied natural gas pass through it.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that his government is seeking a solution to the crisis through dialogue. He said that “no one will benefit from this war if fighting resumes.”
