A shallow magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck offshore near Japan’s Kanto region at 7:39 p.m. local time on Friday, Nov. 6, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The tremor was felt in Miyagi, Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures. Authorities had received no reports of injuries or structural damage.

Officials said the earthquake could cause slight sea-level fluctuations along Japan’s coast, but ruled out the risk of damage. No tsunami warning was issued.

The quake comes after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the Tokyo area and eastern Kanto in August. Its epicenter was in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, at a depth of 70 kilometers. Local authorities at the time also ruled out a tsunami risk for coastal areas.

At least 37 people were injured in five prefectures during the August quake, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency: 15 in Tokyo, nine in Saitama, eight in Kanagawa, four in Chiba and one in Ibaraki. The shaking lasted as long as a minute in some locations. An automatic early-warning system sent alerts to residents’ cellphones, giving them seconds to seek shelter before the shaking began.
