Former Paraguayan President Santiago Peña posted a farewell message on social media Friday, Nov. 6, saying he had chosen to resign to prevent further harm to the country. He said he believed his continued presence in the presidency could deepen political divisions and instability.
Peña’s post appeared before the end of a session in which Paraguay’s Senate voted unanimously to impeach him. Congress did not accept the resignation he submitted Thursday, Nov. 5, and proceeded with the impeachment process.
Peña said he had submitted his resignation in an effort to restore calm. He also called on Paraguayans to unite, rebuild the country’s institutions and restore public confidence.
“I submitted my resignation to prevent further harm to the country and help bring calm back to Paraguay. I do not want my presence to become a source of greater division or instability. My responsibility is to put the country ahead of my personal fate,” he wrote.
In the message, Peña said he was leaving office with gratitude while acknowledging the public’s concern amid the crisis. “I say goodbye with gratitude, without overlooking the anguish of those who are waiting for answers today,” he said.
