Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Saturday, Nov. 7, that he had been targeted in a cyberattack. In a post on X, he said his personal data had been exposed on the dark web and that hackers were seeking additional information.
Tajani said the threats also involved his family, and that people were willing to pay for more details about him and his loved ones. He said he would not be intimidated and would continue working to protect his ministry and Italy. He added that he intended to deepen ties and cooperation with the country’s allies to strengthen their ability to protect themselves.
Tajani said he believed Italy’s support for Ukraine was the political reason he had become a target. He described the country’s position as a defense of a sovereign state’s freedom, democracy and independence, and said that stance was dangerous to criminal groups.
Separately, suspected cyberattacks targeting supermarket refrigeration systems have affected at least nine European countries since Nov. 2. Refrigerators reportedly reached temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius, prompting some stores to discard food or remove it from freezers as a precaution. Carrefour, Ahold Delhaize, Coop, SuperValu, Intermarché and Ica were among the chains that reported affected refrigeration systems. Christophe Hansen, the European Union’s agriculture commissioner, described the incidents as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the food supply chain and undermine consumer confidence in it.
