A Paraguayan court ordered the pretrial detention of former President Santiago Peña on Saturday, Nov. 7. The ruling followed a request from Paraguay’s Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Peña faces allegations of fraud in the allocation of public funds and interference with oversight of Ueno Bank. The allegations have not been established as facts.

Paraguay’s Congress approved impeachment proceedings against Peña on Friday, Nov. 6. The court’s detention order came the following day.

The prosecution also indicted Carlos Carvallo, a former president of the Central Bank, and asked that both men remain in custody.
