Six people were killed and dozens injured Saturday, Nov. 7, after a man fired multiple shots from a moving car in Krakow’s Main Market Square, local authorities said.
The regional police department said the dead included four women and two men. Police officers who were patrolling the square were among those injured.
Police shot the suspect, arrested him and took him to a hospital. He was identified as a Polish citizen and remained in police custody. Images circulating on social media showed people lying on the ground as bystanders tried to provide first aid.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called the incident a “tragic shooting” and said police were investigating the suspect’s background and all the circumstances. In a social media post, he offered condolences to the victims’ families, praised officers who acted at risk to their lives and urged politicians not to exploit the tragedy. He said authorities would establish the circumstances of the crime.
