Former President Barack Obama praised Democrats’ projected gains in the 2026 midterm elections, saying voters had sent a “clear message” that they want change. Projections early Wednesday, Nov. 4, indicated Democrats would win majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, a setback for President Donald Trump’s administration.
Obama said the results reflected the work of strong candidates who ran across the country, including in places where victory had once seemed unlikely. He noted that the candidates came from varied backgrounds and represented different political views, but shared a commitment to public service and to putting the people of their districts and states first.
In his social media post, Obama said voters wanted politics that bring people together rather than deepen divisions, along with leaders who offer practical answers to the challenges they face. He also thanked thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties for helping ensure the election proceeded smoothly.
Obama acknowledged that Trump’s administration has two years remaining in office. He urged elected lawmakers to begin making changes where they have the power, prevent further harm and prepare for the future.
As of early Wednesday, projections showed Democrats with 53 Senate seats to the Republicans’ 42. In the House, which was up for election in its entirety, Democrats were projected to lead 220 to 128. The figures were projections, not final results.
The election took place as Trump’s approval ratings were falling amid the prolonged war with Iran and rising living costs, according to the report. The 2026 midterm cycle included 35 Senate seats, 36 governorships and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives.
