Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday, Nov. 4, that Republicans lost the midterm elections because of the war in Iran. Vance, a member of President Donald Trump’s party, made the statement in a post on X after Democrats won majorities in both the Senate and the House.
“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said that last night,” Vance wrote. He said internal party research found that some voters who supported Trump in 2024 switched to Democratic candidates, and identified four issues behind the change.
According to Vance, those issues were ending the war in Iran, focusing on the cost of living and inflation, putting the United States first, and changing the country’s relationship with Israel. He said Republican voter participation was not the problem; rather, many Republican voters cast ballots for Democrats. Voting is not mandatory in the United States.
Vance also argued that Republicans need to acknowledge why they lost. He wrote that anyone who believes the political cost was worthwhile should make that case, including the loss of the Senate for the next six years. Whether people agreed or disagreed with that position, he said, making the argument would at least be honest.
Democrats won majorities in both chambers of Congress, in what the report described as a historic defeat for Trump. Voters also chose governors in 36 of the 50 states. Five states where Democrats won had been governed by Republicans: Georgia, Iowa, Texas, Ohio and Nevada.
