An audio recording released by LiveATC, a website that streams communications between pilots and air traffic controllers, captured the final moments of a private jet that crashed in South Florida on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 1. All nine people aboard died.

According to the recording, the pilot reported encountering moderate turbulence and said he was trying to find more stable flying conditions. Less than a minute later, he declared an emergency using the international distress call “Mayday” and reported that the aircraft was descending at 10,000 feet per minute. The rate later reached 22,000 feet per minute, the report said.

During the radio exchange, the pilot said the aircraft was going to hit the ground. About 35 seconds after the first distress call, the final recorded words were, “We’re out of time.”

The jet crashed at about 12:50 p.m. local time after departing Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and heading to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The crash sparked a large fire, and emergency crews responded. Authorities had not identified the nine people aboard or said how many were passengers and how many were crew members. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the aircraft “looked like a missile falling” as he commented on the crash.
