The Democratic Party, which opposes President Donald Trump, won a majority of the state governor’s races held Tuesday, Nov. 3, and is set to govern at least 28 states. Of 36 contests, Democrats won 22 and Republicans won 12, while results in Alaska and Kansas were still pending. The party’s gains came alongside victories in congressional races, where Democrats also secured majorities in the Senate and House of Representatives, according to the election results.

Democrats are expected to hold the governorships of 28 states, compared with 20 under Republican control. The party gained five states previously governed by Republicans: Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio and Texas. Democratic candidates were leading in the vote counts in Alaska and Kansas, so the party’s total could rise as those results are finalized. Fourteen states did not hold gubernatorial elections this week; eight of those are governed by Republicans and six by Democrats.

The midterm elections also included contests for one-third of the Senate seats and all 435 seats in the House. The vote took place as Trump’s approval ratings were falling, a decline the article attributed to the prolonged war with Iran and rising living costs in the United States. The results reflected that loss of support, with Democrats gaining control of Congress and a larger share of state governorships.

Among the state-level changes, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated the Republicans in Georgia and was set to become the first Black woman to govern a U.S. state. In Iowa, Democrat Rob Sand ended Republican control of the governor’s office. Nevada elected Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford, who was also set to become the state’s first Black governor. Democrat Amy Acton won in Ohio, and Gina Hinojosa broke the Republican run of governors in Texas.

Other reported Democratic victories included Katie Hobbs in Arizona, Xavier Becerra in California, Phil Weiser in Colorado and Ned Lamont’s reelection in Connecticut. Democrats also retained governorships in Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon and Pennsylvania. In Minnesota, Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar won the governor’s race, while Deb Haaland, a former Interior secretary under Joe Biden, won in New Mexico. Republican candidates prevailed in states including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Wyoming. Alaska and Kansas remained uncalled at the time of the report.
