Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms is projected to have won Georgia’s governorship on Tuesday, Nov. 3, defeating Republican businessman Rick Jackson, according to the Associated Press. If confirmed, Bottoms will be the first Black person and the first woman to lead the state.

Georgia’s history includes slavery and racial segregation laws. In 2020, the state was the site of protests against racism after the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, a young Black man.

Georgia is also the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most prominent figures in the U.S. civil rights movement.

The state has been considered a Republican stronghold since 1972. Bottoms is projected to become the first Democrat to win a Georgia gubernatorial election since 1998.
