Pastor Adam Hamilton has become the first Democrat in nearly a century to win a U.S. Senate seat in Kansas. He defeated Republican Rep. Roger Marshall. Democrats have flipped five seats so far and have 51 senators elected, giving the party a majority in the chamber, according to the report.

Kansas had not elected a Democratic senator since 1932. In the 2024 presidential election, the state gave Donald Trump a 16-percentage-point victory.

The Senate seat will be Hamilton’s first public office. He is pastor of the country’s largest Methodist congregation and was registered as a Republican until earlier this year.

Midterm elections are a significant measure of the political climate facing the White House. Voters choose all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats.

Both chambers are currently controlled by Trump’s Republican Party. The results described in the report would shift control of the Senate to Democrats.
