President Donald Trump said he would accept the results of the 2026 midterm elections, even as projections indicated that his party would lose its majorities in both the Senate and the House. In an interview with The New York Times, Trump said he was “absolutely willing to accept these results” and expected to work with Democrats, adding that the two sides would “probably reach some kind of agreement.”

Trump’s comments came alongside a social media post showing a cap emblazoned with the word “veto.” On Monday, Nov. 2, he had suggested he would use his veto power if Republicans lost control of Congress. “I think I’m going to become Mr. Veto,” Trump said on the New York Post’s Pod Force One podcast. He said lawmakers would send him legislation, he would veto it, and after “a month or two” of vetoes, they might come to the administration to make a deal.

Early Wednesday, Nov. 4, Trump blamed his party’s defeat on his name not appearing on the ballot. “My name wasn’t on the ballot, and if it had been, we would have won in a landslide!” he wrote on social media. During the campaign, Trump had repeatedly urged voters to act as if he were on the ballot. At a campaign event on Monday, he said, “I’m just asking everyone to pretend that my name is on the ballot.”

Democrats had secured 51 Senate seats, giving them a majority, according to the reported results. In the House, Democrats had 180 elected members, compared with 107 Republicans at the time of the report. The figures did not account for all 435 House seats.

The 2026 midterm election cycle includes contests for 35 Senate seats, 36 governorships and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives.
