Mike Johnson, the Republican speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, plans to resign after his party lost ground in the midterm elections, according to U.S. media reports. He has also decided not to seek reelection as minority leader.

Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, became speaker in October 2023. He was reelected to a sixth term in the House during Tuesday’s elections. During the midterm campaign, he had expressed optimism about his party’s performance.

Republicans lost their majorities in both the House and the Senate. Democrats won their largest number of seats since 2008, when Barack Obama was elected president.

The midterm elections were held Tuesday, Nov. 3. Voters chose candidates for one-third of the Senate’s seats, all 435 seats in the House, and governor’s offices in 36 states. Johnson is third in the line of presidential succession, after President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
