Police in India found three drums containing millions of rupees in cash buried beneath the veranda of a modest home in Baraipur Ramnagar, a village in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Brothers Rakesh Yadav and Rajesh Yadav were detained for questioning, and the property was sealed.
Residents said the brothers abruptly left their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic and returned to the village. In the years since, according to local residents, they began buying land, homes, and businesses in the area. Their changed lifestyle drew attention in the village.
The discovery followed an anonymous tip alleging that the money had not been declared and was therefore illegal. The cash was reportedly made up of thousands of bundles of 500-rupee notes. The allegation has not been established; authorities are investigating the money’s origin and legality.
NDTV India reported that an initial search of the home found nothing unusual. Acting on what it described as specific information, police inspected the floor of a room where the soil appeared recently disturbed. Workers were called in, and the three buried drums were found after some digging. Local media reported that India’s Income Tax Department, Goods and Services Tax authorities, and intelligence agencies were contacted to investigate.
