Iran is considering reopening the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours if the United States accepts Tehran’s conditions, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Monday, Nov. 2. He described the possibility of carrying out the plan within two days as another demonstration of Iran’s good faith.

Baqaei said meeting Iran’s demands could restore security in the strait and allow negotiations to resume very quickly. He said messages between Tehran and Washington are still being exchanged through mediators, but the next steps depend on the U.S. accepting Iran’s requests.

The Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil and other hydrocarbon shipments, has been blocked by Tehran since the beginning of the war. It has become a central point of tension between Iran and the United States and a frequent site of attacks. Iran claims control of the waterway and often attacks vessels that try to cross without its authorization.

In September, Iran submitted a proposal through Qatar to reopen the strait. The plan called for a cease-fire, the release of Iranian assets, an end to sanctions on Iran’s oil sector and the lifting of the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports. Any progress now depends on Washington responding favorably to Tehran’s demands.
