Elon Musk joked on Wednesday, Nov. 4, after Democrats secured majorities in both the Senate and the House, according to partial results from the U.S. midterm elections. Musk, an ally of President Donald Trump, was one of the biggest donors supporting Republicans, who lost control of both chambers.

“Looks like my space lasers for interfering with the election didn’t work this time,” Musk wrote on social media.

Musk gave about $500 million to political groups and campaigns during the 2026 election cycle, making him the midterms’ largest individual donor, according to the report. That amount was also listed as the equivalent of about 2 billion Brazilian reais. More than $276 million of his contributions were made starting in July, with the stated goal of bolstering conservative candidates and helping Republicans retain control of Congress.

His largest single contribution was $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, which supports Republican Senate candidates. Musk also gave $76 million to America PAC and $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund. Another $10 million went to the Republican Governors Association and a committee supporting Ken Paxton in his Texas Senate race against Democrat James Talarico, who won the contest.

Vote counting was still underway, but partial results showed Democrats winning majorities in both chambers in what the report described as a historic setback for Trump. Trump acknowledged the loss and praised the Democrats in a phone interview with Fox News, saying, “Well, I’ll say this: Congratulations to the Democrats. They did a good job.”

Trump also sought to distance himself from responsibility for the result, which would affect the final two years of his term, and directed blame toward fellow Republicans. “They’ve been waiting for this for 11 years, and they finally got it. But I don’t see it as a blow against me,” he said.
