President Donald Trump said Wednesday, Nov. 4, that the war with Iran contributed to Republicans’ defeat in the midterm elections. He acknowledged that the conflict and a short-term rise in gasoline prices likely affected the result, but defended his decision to launch the military offensive.

“I think it’s mostly true that Republicans lost the election because of the war in Iran, because it raised gas prices in the short term, and that probably has an effect,” Trump said. He added that he would make the same decision again because, in the long term, Iran must not have a nuclear weapon. “I think it was worth it. We have no choice,” he said.

Trump also addressed the prospect of working with a Congress controlled by Democrats. He said he believed he could get along with members of the opposing party unless they sought to be “destructive,” and said he would use his veto power if he objected to their proposals. Trump added that Democrats had called and wanted to discuss matters, which he said was fine.

Democrats won majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to the report. The result is a setback for Trump, who will face an opposition-controlled Congress during the second half of his term.
