A Ryanair aircraft traveling from Rome to Lisbon landed safely at Humberto Delgado Airport on Friday, Nov. 6, after a bomb threat. Authorities activated security procedures and carried out checks at the airport.
Portugal’s Public Security Police received the warning by phone and sent an officer to monitor the incident and begin security measures. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances of the threat and determine its origin.
The incident came amid a wave of bomb threats that disrupted European air travel this week. At least 27 flights in several countries were affected, prompting diversions, unscheduled landings and the deployment of military fighter jets. All the aircraft landed safely, and no explosives were found.
The warnings were sent by email to airports and authorities responsible for civil aviation. Some messages were signed by people claiming to belong to Male State, a Russian ultranationalist movement known for extremist positions, misogynistic rhetoric and support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. There is no confirmation that the group was involved in the incidents, and the identity of those responsible for the alerts remains unknown. France, Italy, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Romania and Austria were among the countries affected. Emergency protocols were activated to protect passengers and crews.
