Paraguayan President Santiago Peña did not appear in person at a Senate session on Friday, Nov. 6, where lawmakers were considering whether to impeach him. The proceeding is taking place amid a banking crisis following the collapse of Banco Ueno, described as the country’s largest digital bank.

Peña sent attorneys Ricardo Preda and Adolfo Ferreiro to represent him. Both addressed the senators during the session.

Peña’s defense team had asked Congress for an additional 72 hours to prepare its response to the impeachment case. The request was denied.

The impeachment petition was submitted Thursday, Nov. 5, by a group of 35 lawmakers. The Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved opening the proceeding, with 78 votes, and sent the case to the Senate. Peña had previously resigned, but Parliament did not consider his resignation because there were not enough members present to establish a quorum.
