Democrat Aaron Ford was elected governor of Nevada on Wednesday, Nov. 4, after the U.S. midterm elections. He defeated Republican Joe Lombardo, the state’s incumbent governor, becoming the first Black governor elected in Nevada.
Ford is Nevada’s attorney general. His victory was among the gains made by Democrats in this year’s midterm elections. Voters also chose governors in 36 states, while the elections renewed one-third of the U.S. Senate and all seats in the House of Representatives.
The Democratic Party, which opposes President Donald Trump, won majorities in both chambers of Congress and secured more governorships than any other party, according to the source report. The results reshape the political landscape and could make it harder for Trump to advance his agenda, as his party’s support base is expected to shrink.
Ford’s win came as Lombardo had the direct backing of Trump. The president appeared with Lombardo at campaign rallies in Nevada and endorsed the Republican’s candidacy on several occasions. Ford’s defeat of Lombardo added the Nevada governor’s race to the Democrats’ midterm victories.
