Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied that he plans to leave the Trump administration to run for president in 2028. “Working for Trump through the end of his term has always been my plan,” Rubio told The New York Times in an interview on Thursday, Nov. 5. Asked about reports of a possible departure, he said, “Honestly, I don’t know where this is coming from.”
News reports had said Rubio was considering leaving the administration even before the midterm election results, with the possibility reportedly gaining momentum afterward. Republicans lost their majorities in both the Senate and the House, and The Independent reported that Rubio was among five members of Trump’s cabinet who intended to leave following the Democrats’ victory.
An unnamed source told The Independent that Rubio was currently the leading contender for the Republican nomination, describing him as clearly ahead of Vice President JD Vance. The source said Rubio could not run for president while serving as secretary of state and argued that his association with the administration could hurt his chances.
The report also said Trump’s poor standing with the public could weigh on Rubio, as well as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Rubio represents the Trump administration’s more ideological wing, linked to the MAGA movement. As secretary of state, he has led U.S. relations with Latin America.
