General strike in Argentina brings together 130 thousand people in Buenos Aires

The first general strike against the economic measures of Javier Milei’s government in Argentina began this Wednesday (24) with a walk towards the Congress building in Buenos Aires.

With the motto “the country is not for sale”, the general strike was called by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the largest trade union center in the country, from noon (the same time in Brasília), and the forecast is that it will last 12 hours.

The Confederation of Argentine Workers (CTA), the second largest union, also joined, as well as sectors of Peronism.

As a result, the General Labor Center (CGT), the main organizer of the movement, states that more than 1.5 million people joined the strike in the country.

Where did this come from?

It is worth remembering that the Milei government implemented blockades to prevent protesters from arriving at the National Congress. CGT leader Héctor Daer criticized the ban on the right to assembly.

Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni said that the demonstration resulted in financial losses for “very many Argentines”.

The blockades are part of the “anti-picketing protocol”, against road blockages, adopted by Security Minister Patricia Bullrich in December, in which protesters are only allowed to be on the sidewalks.

In December it didn’t work, and police and demonstrators clashed in Buenos Aires in a protest against Milei’s measures.
