President Donald Trump said the outcome of the midterm elections might have been different if his name had appeared on the ballot. In a social media post early Wednesday, Nov. 4, he wrote that, had he been listed, “we would have won by a landslide.”
Projections indicated that Trump’s party was set to lose control of both the House and the Senate. At the time of the report, Democrats had won 46 Senate seats, compared with 39 for Republicans. In the House, where all seats were up for election, Democrats led Republicans 114 to 65.
Trump had repeatedly urged voters during the campaign to vote as though he were on the ballot. At the campaign’s closing event on Monday, Nov. 2, he said, “I’m just asking everyone to pretend my name is on the ballot.”
Midterm elections are considered an important measure of support for the White House. Voters choose all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats in the elections.
