The Associated Press projects that James Talarico will become the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas since 1988. The result would be a historic victory in a state that has traditionally been a Republican stronghold.

Talarico, currently a member of the Texas House of Representatives, was considered an underdog within his own party. He was little known across the state when the campaign began.

He faced Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, an ally of President Donald Trump who has been embroiled in several corruption scandals.

Midterm elections are viewed as an important measure of public sentiment toward the White House. Voters choose all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats. Both chambers are currently controlled by Republicans.
